This week is volunteer week in Canada. I would like to take a moment and say thank you to the SaskTel Pioneers and all that they do in our communities. Here are few stats to help put perspective into what we do. We donated $158,716.28 to various organizations that needed financial assistance, 581 Heart Pillows went to hospitals, 308 Hug-A-Bears were made that will help children in traumatic situations, 4,369 computers were donated to schools and non profits, 535 backpacks were filled with school supplies and donated to children in low income families, 10, 629 books were donated to low income families, 1100 backpacks with supplies for homeless people were given away and the total value of our in kind donations equaled $1,130,261.40. We also volunteered 43,481 hours of personal time to help the many projects the Pioneers do in Saskatchewan. Outside of this, our volunteers also coach, sit on volunteer boards and just do whatever is required to help out. I don’t know of very many organizations that impact the Saskatchewan Communities like the we do.
I took a moment to reflect on why volunteerism is so important to me. Some answers were just wanting to help the community, getting that good feeling inside and seeing the appreciation from someone who you helped. Often I hear well what’s in it for me? Some of this is helping to keep alive the services you or a loved one may need someday. An example of this is by helping STARS with their showhome lottery. You never know when you or someone you know may need this service. I have many stories over the years of personally seeing the impact the work we do have on people. Things such as the hug I received from an employee who got to deliver backpacks for the homeless, the thank you from someone who received a Heart Pillow, the look I got from giving a child a hug-a-bear or the smile I received from a young homeless girl I gave a coat to so she could stay warm. This is what’s in it for me or any other volunteer.
The SaskTel Pioneers is an organization that I am very proud to be a part. It is an organization that has been built by people like you. People who have helped in some way in the past, present or future to make our communities a better place to be. We are an organization that do things simply because it is the right thing to do. Thank you for everything that you do.
